Letter from debt collection agency

Im not sure if this is the right, my brother recently received a letter from a debt agency regarding an amount of £16.02, the agencys client is orange which my brother had a contract with them which was 2/3 years ago, orange made no attempt to contact my brother before the agencys letter, also the letter has his first name spelt wrong well 1 letter is missing so could he say its not him as the name is spelt correct and not pay the debt, hes going to find out if its a mistake and if it is his debt hes going to pay it, would writing to orange and complain they didnt contact him first re the debt
should orange have written to him first?

  • for £17 odd quid its not the end of the world. Ring the agency and ask them for more information about where the debt came from and/or ring orange and ask them why they haven't contacted him directly.

I had a problem with them and it turned out to by my fault but it was sorted really quickly

  • Better off writing to debt collection agencies. Ask them for proof of the debt (don't aknowledge it). Pop over to the debt free wanabee board for some sample letters etc.

I did this to one ages and ages ago, they soon shut-up as it's actually quite difficult sometimes for a recovery agy to get a copy of the original signed contract and by law for a agy to demand payment they also have to be able to prove it (if requested) by a copy of the original signed contract ;)
