Shop remrking price UP during its sale..?

Hi to all,

Today my daughter bought a Coat in a Sale... it was marked at £40..

When she got home we gave the label a rub where it had Biro scribble, just to see the saving.. and Underneath was a printed £30.. ( with a equivalent Euros price as well)

We contacted the shop and they have given all sort of excuses blaming the part time assistants. etc .. An as no one high enough to mark a ruling was around today
We are going back next week to kick further higher AS? !!!!!!!...

Anyone got any thought /views /advice on this or whether its even an allowed but naughty practice.

I suppose shops can really charge whatever they like , but in this case shouldn't be stupid enough to leave the old price around to see.

take care all

  • Im sure than if they are marking at price up they have to remove the original price, but if its the other way round they can keep the original price on it. U could also play the game saying that it was 'marked' at £30 and you were overchanged, as they dont know that there was another ticket ontop of it!

  • Contact local trading standards to be sure, but I think IIRC that this is in breach of the law. It shows prices being marked up before a sale commences and there have been cases of big retailers being fined for this.

I can't find any references online to this at present, so CAB and TS will be best way to proceed.

This is taken from a Northern Ireland website but I'd imagine that the principle applies nationwide:

    Consumerline - Misleading prices
If you come across an example of a misleading price you should draw it to the attention of the shop or business (or the customer service section if you are dealing with a chain). You should also report the matter to Consumerline on 0845 600 62 62. Under the Consumer Protection (Northern Ireland) Order 1987 it is a criminal offence to give a misleading price indication. Consumerline can refer the details to the Trading Standards Service if it appears an offence has been committed
  • If you decrease a price you can oversticker, if you increase you must rekimball the product or remove the original price. You cannot just oversticker when increasing. Hence why a lot of swing tickets have a tear off strip with the price only on this section, for the retailer to remove if they increase the price. Coat either for £30 or TS to be honest.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I bought my son a pair of trainers last wee. Big sign said were £54.99 now £19.99 . There was also a sticker in the shoe saying the same. When I took the sticker off the printed price on the label said a price of £29.00 so not such a big saving.

I also shop at Bicester village, I would now never buy around Christmas or Bank holiday times as the Timberland shop especially do put the prices up when they know it will be busy I have noticed. I got a pair of boots for £30. A couple of weeks later nearer Christmas, they were repriced at £50.

I bought some DVD's at christmas from Tesco and they had £9 stickers over the top of £4 stickers. I was still charged £9, I know I should have taken them back but it was close to christmas and needed them.
