I remember them being huge slices of potato cut lengthways and the fish or sausagemeat patty sandwiched between the potato slices then dipped in the same batter used for frying everything else. I think the fat must have been so hot it was sealed immediately.
I forgot that the chippy in our road used to have a huge ginger cat sitting on the counter, I loved going there and no one batted an eyelid. Armstrong St Keren 29!
they were making these on market kitchen the other day but they used beer batter and they called them haddock specials
here's the recipe

I googled Gypsy Creams and it seems that they are still available in some places but have been renamed 'Romany Creams' (my oh my - getting very PC about biscuits now!).
The last time I saw Gypsy Creams was in a shop on Cathcart Road near Holmlea Road in Glasgow about 7 years ago, went back down there a few months ago but they no longer sell them.:(Like good food and drink?
Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.

It was the middle of the night, I couldn't sleep and had been messing about on the os threads - including this one. My mind must have been slowly sauntering the byways of the 1960's and it popped into my mind. DH was awake, I could tell by his breathing.
'Do you remember Surprise peas? I asked. 'How the hell does your mind work...?' was the reply! He did go on to say that he did remember Surprise peas. A stepping stone from tinned to frozen peas. Although they were dried they were quite different from 'dried' peas.
Does anyone else remember them? They were of the same ilk as Vesta curries, which I loved. I also loved the Fray Bentos meat pies in a tin. From time to time I still treat myself to one - lovely - pity about the Surprise peas, they went well together!0 -

I remember Surprise peas :j! You boiled some water in a pan, added a little bit of sugar (or mint) and put the peas in the boiling water. Think they took around 5-10 minutes to swell up properly - I know that my mother used to get them and I bought them myself when I first got married in 1972!
Thanks for the memory :T .0 -

Another one that I remember. That was in the days when the Batchelor's Soups need to be simmered for absolutely ages - you had to watch the bottom of the pan with the Thick Lincoln Pea Soup! It was JUST pea soup - not Pea and Ham like you get today. There were always recipe ideas on the packets as well.
I can't abide Pea and Ham soups from tins/packets - they always taste like there's smoked ham in them.0 -
I was born in the 60s and remember quite a monotonous diet - during the week either mince, mashed potatoes and peas, or stewing steak, mashed potatoes and runner beans. We used to have chicken on Sundays, pot roasted so it was not crispy and came with its own (really thin) gravy. No roast potatoes - too fatty! Anything involving a sauce, or frying pan, was a real rarity. Mum used to make a white sauce for Chicken Au Gratin occasionally on Mondays to use up left over chicken, but I think she thought it just made a lot of washing up really.
Fish and chips was a holidays only treat!
Thinking about it, my mum had lost her Dad at a young age with a heart attack, so she was probably keeping an eye on our cholestoral. (Sorry Mum.....I don't think it worked!)
I also remember fish fingers, with mash and peas, and chocolate Angel Delight being my favourite meal. (could have just been the 70s by then)
Pudding was fruit and custard, or Carnation Milk, usually, until the advent of yoghurt on your doorstep from the milkman! Even better, when we got the freezer, Arctic Roll.......
On a related subject, weren't school dinners just fantastic then???? I feel so sorry for my daughter now, getting Pasta King and pizza all the time. I used to love the really thick gravy with the liver.
Re Gypsy Creams: don't you sometimes get a Gypsy Cream like thing in a Family Selection? (maybe Fox's?) Certainly some sort of fancy choccy biccie with choc cream in the middle. Must go and have a look at the nicecupofteaandasitdown website, if it's still there.....0 -
What I remember is nothing going to waste - roast, then became shepherds pie or rissoles, if the joint had a bone it was used to make soup. Breakfast was cooked, lunch was something on toast, when I got home from school it was a cup of tea and home made cake and we had dinner when Dad got home from work - about 6.30, always had pudding of some sort. Looking back it must have been a boring diet, but it didn't kill me so must have been OK. What I do remember is that we all ate together and sat at the table.0

I can't really remember having set meals on certain days just always having a Sunday roast which was either chicken or pork , rarely lamb or beef. Sunday tea was always shippams spread sandwiches with tinned fruit and evaporated milk later this progressed to Plumrose chopped ham and pork which were like 'silver sausages'.
One meal usually consisted of mince with veggies although my mum used to add a packet of stuffing to make the mince go that bit further.
Sausages and mash was another.
Belly pork with veggies and potatoes.
Cold meats with home made chips
Liver and Onions with veggies
Rarely had any convenience foods at all, can never remember having packets of crips, sweets in the house. Remember the Alpine pop man coming around and delivering to my friends houses but we were never allowed to have any.
More often than not we drank tap water, cordial or did without.
Mum ocassionally baked home made cakes.
We used to take an empty glass bowl to the icecream man and ask him for a £1.00's worth of icecream which we usually put in the freezer until we had finished our tea.
We had school dinners which were lovely back then.....meat and 2 veggies with jam and coconut slice with custard or chocolate sponge with pink custard !!! Oh those were the days ...:rotfl:I love to wake up and meet the day. I think that life is not to be wasted or thrown away.:D0 -
I had never heard of cremola foam until I moved to Glasgow in the 80's. I do remember the 'pop man' selling raspberry cordial, which was bright red and made Sunny D look positively healthy. That was a treat though.
my favourite was on a Saturday night watching Brucie and sharing a plain chocolate Bounty with my Dad.0
