VAT receipts

Not sure where to post this, but guessed here is a good start. My company pays me a mileage allowance for travelling between sites for meetings. They now insist I provide receipts in order that they can claim back the VAT on my petrol - most of which I use for private use. I did not think it was possible to claim back tax someone else has paid. It is my car, my petrol and the allowance is a travel claim cover. Any help?

This is a new VAT directive which states that if an employer is paying a mileage allowance to its employees, then VAT petrol recipts must be produced. Your employer is paying you a mileage allowance, therefore they are paying for some of your petrol.

Yes another stupid directive mainly designed to stop people claiming I think.
How are you supposed to provide a VAT receipt if you are using some of the fuel for private use ?????
ie You fill up you car / van etc and and get a VAT receipt then keep mileage records for personal and business use.
How can you then get a VAT receipt for part of the tankful of fuel to support your mileage claim????
Absolutely ridiculous...............
I hope someone has an answer cos I have'nt got one !!!!!!!!!
