HATE my job!

I work for a government agency answering phones and processing registrations, as well as occasionally trying to deal with unusual general enquiries, which often don't fall under our umbrella.

Anyhow, I've been in the job 7 weeks and I hate it. So many rude people on the phone. I'm always polite and courteous but I've been insulted so many times by customers (and other staff from other offices) and just shouted at so often. It does my head in. It's a temporary job so I hope my next assignment is better (I'm going back into Nurse training in May). I'm very tempted to answer the phones under a different name on the last day and if anyone is rude or aggressive, just tell them to **** off. My calls aren't recorded so I could get away with it.

Oh, and the software we use to process registrations is incompetent and we've basically been told it's tough ****. We just have to deal with angry customers who've had to ring an 0870 number and been kept on the phone for 20 mins when it's a job that should take 5 mins.

Just wanted a rant. I don't feel better 'cause I've got 3 more hours of work today.

My brother works for a Local Authority in the Housing Benefit section. When he was a manager at one authority, he had no problem in calling benefit cheats liars and thieves to their faces when they came to see why their benefit had been stopped and just getting up and walking out of the interview room when people got a bit lairy.

Basically if they're abusive on the phone tell them you don't have to put up with it and put the phone down.
  • We've been told to do the same, but I always get the customers who are just plain mardy and aggressive rather than the ones who are F'ing and blinding. It makes it worse when our registration system is so incredibly slow. I have to sit there and make small talk and try and justify why they should sit there for ages because my system takes ages to find records. Does my head in.
  • I used to work in a call centre a few years ago and always had rude and creepy people ringing up. My way of dealing with it was to be extra nice as they got themselves in a right flap cos the nicer you are usually stumps them. Often people like that are looking for a good old row... dont give them the satisfaction.
As for other employees in other offices giving you hassle and being rude... report them when you leave and hopefully they will get a telling off.

Just tell yourself at least its not forever and you will soon be back to the nursing.

As you work for a government agency, and you're a temp, and you've made your post in the middle of the afternoon, you may not have to put up with it much longer as all internet access is usually tracked no matter what sort of company you work for and if you're found to be abusing your internet access in any way it's very easy for the company to terminate your temp contract - just a word of warning as a few years ago whilst temping it happened to me!

Companies do things for a reason, you may not agree with what they are doing, you of course do not deserve to be insulted or berated during the contract, but each hour you work there earns you £whatever your hourly rate is, think of that each day and you will hopefully get through the contract.
