Basic CGT question

I own a number of different shares in various ex-building societies (and one ex-mutual insurance company). I want to get on top of where I stand vis a vis CGT, and my question is very basic. How do I calculate the original cost/value of these shares? Is there a resource somewhere that I can look up that can tell me the original value of the shares? Or should I assume each of them was acquired for nothing and therefore my starting point is NIL cost?
Thanks.
Thanks.

If these shares did not actually cost you anything and were issued upon privatisation then your acquisition cost is nil.If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0

in the event that for some reason the base cost is not nil, you can usually find out CGT information from the investor section of the relevant company's website where there has been some significant event which has affected it.0
