in Cutting tax
Hi
I wondered if any one could help me with this one as i keep running into a brick wall
I worked for a company (A) for a year and paid my tax every week and the owners and I were friends and i wasn't really bothered about a payslip as long as i got my money. When i left i was told that they would let me know when my P45 arrived and nothing has happenend since this was more than a year ago and still after repeatedly asking i have nothing. I had then moved to a different company (B) and they went bust and i am still waiting on that P45.
The thing is the tax office has no record of me working for company (A) and ni record of me leaving company (B). and until they have this info I cannot do my tax returns. I am desperate and p'd off. Please can some one help me!

Surely the company(A) should have given you your P45 when you left, and sent you a P60 at the end of the tax year? And you should have asked for payslips. They issue these forms, they do not "arrive" unless they were paying someone else to do it all for them.
Now you have no proof of what went on, and I am afraid it sounds very much like company (A) have not passed on any deductions they made.
Time to go round for a chat with your friends I think.0 -
You could try to reconstruct your income history by checking your bank statements for your pay each month though obviously without payslips you have no proof that the income was net of tax or paid gross. Jennifernil is correct both employers should have given you a P45 when you left them. P45's are part of their employer pack if they have registered as employers with HMRC.
BTW just wondered, why do you have to complete a tax return?

I am a foreign national from South Africa, I live in Engaland now and my partner and i have a few debts that if settled would take alot of pressure off. He is English and self employed so he isn't much help with this because his accountants deal with his affairs and only for the self employed.0

So does that mean you have only ever been a Pay As You Earn (PAYE)employee? If so it's unlikely you would have to complete a Self Assessment Tax return.
If you want to claim back overpaid tax that your employers may have deducted from your pay then you could try asking for a "Statement of Earnings" if they won't give you a P45. Failing that then you could write to HMRC giving them full information concerning your employment and ask them to look at those employers to see if they fulfilled their obligations to the tax authorities by way of making regular returns to HMRC.
Relevant information would include :-
Full name and address of employers
Start and end date of each employment
How much you received from each employerThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Please don't take this the wrong way but I assume you are working legally and that you have a valid NI number? It's much more difficult to get by without one now but in the past I had clients who employed staff from overseas legitimately but who had not got their permanent NI number and that made it difficult to make the necessary PAYE returns.0

Yes I do have an NI number and both these companies took my details. The thing is i spoke to the tax office and asked for a statement of earnings but there is no record of me working for company A and company B has not yet submitted any books to show that i left.
I just don know what to do anymore cause im going round in circles, if only these people could do things properly from the start...0 -
It sounds as though company A has rooked you (ie not put your pay through the books). If Company B has gone bankrupt it will take a while to sort the paperwork out.
Not looking good I'm afraid.0
