Removing Default Notice from Credit File

Hi all,
I had an overdraft which was defaulted in 2005. I truly, honestly, didn't receive notice of the Bank's intention to file it as I'd moved house earlier that year. I did, however, negotiate a full & final payment with Wescott (boo, hiss) when they tracked me down 6 months later.
I had a half-hearted try at getting rid of it in 2006 but want to try again now as it's stopping me even opening a current a/c at present (no great loss but the Quidco money would come in handy
)
My problem is that I've thrown everything relating to the a/c away except one letter with a reference from the Bank on it from 2006 which politely tells me to bog off.
Has anyone else found shocking record-keeping preventing them from potentially getting a default removed from their file?
If not, do you think it's worth just listing name & last registered address etc and/or quoting the reference from their last letter so that they know I'm back?
Any and all thoughts gratefully received and thanks for reading me!

Welcome to the six year rule.
Unfortunately the default will be on your credit file until 2011.
Been there, done that. Got the T-shirt.
You CAN add a statement to your credit file, but banks/lenders seem to ignore these anyway.
You moved and didn't advise your bank. Naughty. You knew you owed them money and I reckon you didn't want to pay it back. Double Naughty. They only have to write to the last address they had on file for you and voila, Gotcha! You didn't give them a forwarding address. Have a Gotcha Oscar!
Your best bet would probably be to go back to the bank you defaulted with and ask them for a current account. Otherwise you're in Basic Bank Account territory. Or your mattress.
You had a bank account. You got an overdraft. You f**ked off without paying the overdraft off. You didn't tell the bank where you had gone. Would you give you a current account???? Your original bank might, but no other one will.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Withabix - it's not quite as bad as you make it seem

I did write to change address and I only found out the a/c had been closed when I went to repay it 3 months after it had been defaulted (having taken out a loan to do so). Wescott tracking me down was mainly because I gave the Bank my details again.
I'm OK because I do have a current a/c / overdraft which suits me - I just saw a thread on here with a link outlining a method others had used to have defaults removed and wanted to give it a try - if it doesn't work then I'll survive another 3 years:o
And, yes, I would give me a bank a/c - because I'm nice like that

But that's how anyone looking at your credit file will see it!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
You cannot remove a default unless it was made in error which yours wasn't.0
