What's a reasonable amount of disposeable income to live off?

And to also have enough to live a varied and interesting if not extravagant lifestyle?

Talking once mortgage/rent, food, bills, creditors have been paid off, what is a reasonable amount to live off, for things like entertainment/clothes/nights out/dvds, but still within a budget??

Gosh! What a question - how long is a piece of string> :D

Seriously though, I think it depends on the personal circumstances. And also how resourceful you are. So someone could have dramatically less disposable income, but use it in a much more economic way to another and go on wonderful hols etc.

Which I guess is a waffley way of saying I don't know!!! :D

  • I felt very comfortable a few years back when I was working 35 hours a week in my 'normal' job and doing a few hours at nightschool as a Lecturer which gave me an extra £250 a month. That extra £250 gave me a level of comfort to actually enjoy living.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
  • I was wondering this the other week - then I did a CCCS Debt Rememdy and noticed that once you've put in your household makeup, income and important expenditure (housing and utilities), the next page actually pre-filled suggested amounts for things like food, hairdressing, leisure etc.

They're mid-range figures as I discovered - some of mine were higher and got flagged, some were lower (can't recall if they were also flagged though) - but it's a starting point if it's 'official' figures you were wanting.

If however, it's an idea of what the rest of us think is reasonable that you wanted - as said, it's a piece of string question.
