Advice please RE: Intimidating debt collector

Hi thank you for taking the time to read this.

We had a knock at the door tonight and DP answered. The man at the door had a conversation with DP as follows.

Him: Hello
DP:Hello
Him: Are you Mr A?
DP: Why?Whos asking?
Him: Well, are you?
DP:Who are you and where are you from?
Him: I can only talk about this with Mr A.
DP: Okay, yeah I am
Him: Dont worry, I havent come to collect your goods...yet. My names Mr B...*Flashes ID* (DP did not see his badge fully in the dark and it was only flashed at him) I've got a **** debt with yourself. Have you got a partner called Miss Z?
DP: Yeah
Him: We have three accounts, your **** account, your partners ***** account and your partners **** account. I've come to make a payment arrangment.
DP: I am in contact with your company (At this stage DP assumed this was Call Serve, as we know the debts mentioned are with them) I can make a token payment on the 25th.
Him: Can you not make payment any sooner?
DP: No, I am on a debt managment plan.....

He interrupts and says (as he is walking away) "Im wasting my time here aren't I." turns back to DP and says, pointing finger, "You'll regret this".

DP then asks him if he has certification by the FSA, he says "Dunno" (At this point he is walking over to his car, DP following)

DP: I am taking your registration plate and reporting you to the company. What is your name? (He ignores.Gets into his car, drives away with no lights on.)

Can anyone please advise what to do about this man?We have phoned Call Serve and the man is not a member of their staff, and the debt has been passed on to another company (of which we had no idea!)

  • I'd say you don't need to do anything, yet. I suspect he's someone who's taken over the debt, expected to easily get you or your OH to agree to pay, & was then annoyed at noy getting any money out of you. As you didn't sign anything, he's no further forward than he was when arrived, so just carry on making your payments as normal. The stuff about "You'll regret this" was just posturing by him, but it was unprofessional & I'd keep your record of what happened for future reference.

If anyone from the company rings you or comes round again, firmly but politely tell them you want all future communication to be in writing. If they come round, tell them the same thing, & ask them to leave otherwise you'll call the police, then calmly shut the door. If another company has taken over the debt, it's their responsibility to inform you of that in writing, not just pitch up at your door with precious little to say other than that they want money. No-one should have to discuss their private business on the doorstep for all the neighbours to hear, & you certainly don't have to invite them into your home. You're on a DMP, so stick with that, but please speak to any of the organisations in my signature to get advice on how to put your offer of a token payment in writing if & when you can afford to do so. :)
