When I got divorced in 1988 with 2 under 3's to feed and clothe etc, my ex didn't play ball about maintenance. I took a temp casual job at £100 per week for three weeks, I ended up staying till 2000 and moved into customer services and then into sales. You never know what opportunities are waiting round the next corner but you have to go out and find them. Good Luck

(also I live in a small town with no large employers)

Then I started doing computing at night school and managed to get my office job which lead to me being a secretary and bookeeper
    ......

Just a thought, but small towns offer different types of opportunities. Small business can't always afford to employ enough staff to cover times when they're really busy.

Have you considered offering your services on a self-employed basis. Any type of secreterial service, typing up urgent report, bookeeping etc. Anything you know you could do well. You could probably advertise cheaply in local publications (even parish newsletters, shop windows etc). Get a folder together of the type of things you can do, work out fair prices - (not too cheap, people apreciate what they pay for and if it's too cheap they'll take advantage).

Make sure your presentation is good - it will be all they know about you. You could even drop a few details into local businesses.

There may also be a small business course in the area - this will keep you busy and increase your self esteem, (and put you in contact with others starting a business and possibly needing secreterial help!)

Think of this as an opportunity.

  • I was thinking about working from home (both my partner and dd are partially disabled and it would make sense)

Again, its a confidence thing - I'm not good with people but I suppose after the initial contact I would still be working on my own.......

I did ask about this at the initial interview at the Job centre but was told they couldnt help and to contact the Small business gateway - nearest office 30 miles away. Think I might see if they have a website and check it out.

I am currently studying the Advanced European computing driving licence too to try and get more qualifications.

    Thanks again for everyones ideas.

Maybe you could look at jobs in the social care type sector as often personal experience counts for a lot. Pay is pretty variable but it might be worth a look.

I have to support myself, my husband and our dog on £2,400 a year! Now thats spreading it really thin but we manage, life's boring most days but I am happy (at the moment) some children would be nice though!

I have the choice of living off £200 Working Tax Credit a month OR potentially £0 on JSA - which would you chose??

    think positiv£ , b£ happy!

I would also like to thank you all for the advice on this forum. I do agree that you have to try yourself to find work, however the more help you can get from third parties (jobcentre etc) the better. I have arranged an interview with a placement officer for the next time I visited the jobcentre.

    Things crossed!!!
