Yorks B. Soc. don't like (or know) me!

I'm having real problems with a new account at the Yorkshire Building Society. They don't seem to want to acknowledge my existence.

When opening a new account (even if I'm already logged in securely) they maintain their 'electronic verification system' doesn't know I exist. I've been a saver with them for nearly 10 years and haven't moved home either - but they want further proof of identity.

I know there are money laundering rules but:

- I'm only moving money from one account to another within the same society
- They've told me they can accept my money in but then I won't be able to withdraw it!

I've thought about closing all my accounts - but have some in should demutualisation become fashionable again.

Anyone else had a problem?

I wonder if they are using the 'cut down' electoral register - I'm not on that one?

  • I think that they may have an inherent design fault on their electronic verification kit. Some 3 or 4 years ago when I first opened an a/c. with them with £100 for "membership" purposes, I was between houses and hence electoral registers. The teller was unable verify my new address so I then offered my old one which I had moved from some 2 years previously. Eh voila, I was immediately offered a warm welcome.
I had taken my driving license and bank statement with me which both showed my new address but these were politely frowned upon even though it was a face to face application !
Every time that I open a new a/c. with them nowadays, I use a local agency who are extremely courteous and who always ask for and accept the aforementioned documents.
I realise that this is not feasible if you attempting to make transactions from the comfort of your own armchair.

    Thanks for that Eddie

Good idea about the agency - we have one v. close so I will try that out.

The Yorkshire use Experian data to verify idividuals, not any cut down databases or the like. There can be some very subtle things that can exclude people being elecronically. Things like not including middle initials can affect verification. Make sure you don't miss off any personal information off when completing the application.

Yorks did tell me they use Experian.

I still don't understand why they can't recognise me when 3 other financial institutions in the last year or so have accepted me as a brand new saver - without any further verification of identity. 2 of them explained the full electoral register was enough evidence. That's why I wondered if the Yorks was using the cut down one.

I can only assume the Experian database has the mismatched name (or similar) on it.
