Hello,
I fancy a career change and have thought up a mad idea to go from a very good IT job to postman?
Any idea what the wages are these days for Royal Mail jobs like this?

Hi rik,
I just left Royal Mail (I was a postwoman)
You'll start on around £7.40 ph, rising to £8 after six months and then to £8.50 after 12 months (these figures might be a few pence out either way)
However it's EXTREMELY unlikely you'll be offered a full time post (RM are trying to move over to a part-time workforce). You'll probably be offered a 25hours a week contract. However, there is always as much overtime available as you want.. so you can easily pull in 40+ hours a week.
There are plenty of perks (stamps and xmas bonus, door-to-door payments etc) but also several cons (it's actually bloody hard work at times! it's no fun traipsing around in the rain, and you will always get the most rubbish jobs/walks to do as everything is based on seniority.. and as a new-starter you'll be right at the bottom of the pecking order)
Hope that helps

actually my hubby has just been offered an interview for a 40 hour post as a Post person. Works out at £ 8.48 rising to £9 after 6 months.
They do online advertising & on line applications. If successful, you are given an online 'sorting test' & online personality questionnaire. These MUST be submitted within 4 days of application.
Hubby was offered interview today - Must be booked within 48 hours, interview on a specific day only, if you can't make that day, application withdrawn!
Still very excited, though!0 -
just to add, rate varies post to post (no pun intended!)0

custardy may be able to help, he's with the RM.My TV is broken!

I used to be a postwoman & i really enjoyed it.
I left 7 years ago because i had a baby + the people i worked with had the mentality of 3 year olds & were nothing but bullies.
I think the job has gone down hill in recent year with RM trying to save money by cutting hours & walks. I know alot of the people i used to work with have now left as the job just wasn't what it used to be.
I used to be able to do my hours + O/T & take home £450 a week but they've cut O/T alot.
Also i'm not 100% sure but i think they may have also bought in that a new employee doesn't get any sick pay for 1 year... not sure though.“Hope is the only bee that makes honey without flowers.”
Some people only dream of angels, i held one in my arms.

My dad took up a job for RM as a casual postman over the Christmas period and is actually still working there to this day. From what I've heard, it's a really hard job, especially if you're new to it.. He works incredibly long hours but only gets paid for 32/33 hours a week, despite the fact that he spends a lot longer on his rounds. Within the first month he's had to deal with a lot of hassle, with being sent around to different areas and having to get used to the new round, and also his trolley was broken into while it was parked! [That's London for you!!] But I think it may just be a case of getting used to the job. Like daisy2002 says, the people he's working with are apparently as described, and Im not sure if I could stick to the job as my dad has done, I simply would not be able to hack it.0

Where about in London does your dad work?
I used to work in the Hammersmith sorting office & my brother used to work in the Fulham sorting office. I also know people who work in Chiswick & Paddington.“Hope is the only bee that makes honey without flowers.”

if you left 7 years ago then you honestly wouldnt recognise the job now.
okay.moneys good, very good for what is really a low skill manual job.
if its like when i started you need to work 1 year before you get RM sick pay.
this is a long time in a job where its easy to pull a muscle, trip, get a cold etc.
i pulled a back muscle tripping after around 6 months nd had to take 2 weeks off on SSP.
part time jobs can be a nightmare.its varies from office to office.
in my office they often come in to their 'walk' not fully ready for them so they may leave the office much later than the full timers.
dont assume you will get the option of full time contracts later on.
most offices dont take on full time posties anymore.
most people(myself included) are surprised by just how much mail/packages a foot postie is expected to carry.0 -
my husband is a postman/delivery driver.
he's worked for them since 1987, does the night shift and an av of 35 hours overtime over 6 days, so with all the allowances, he clears £550 per week..........
you can see why people prefer to live on benefits.....working 75 hours a week and not seeing the family is no fun
rik_t there are plenty of others jobs out there, better paid and you'll be more appreciated by the public0 -
I think it's in the Chingford area, but Im not completely sure as he's moved around so much.. It's definitely in East London..0
