Been Waiting (question as well!)

I haven't bought much kitchen stuff for about a year, as we had extensive alterations done in the house and lived in a temporary kitchen with microwave, toaster and 2 ring camping stove. May to November. It inevitably cost more than we thought it would, saving on food with your encouragement has helped.

Been out today and got a few items at Lakeland:j temporary blender has now been replaced with Bamix, been promising myself that. Wok handles had become dangerous, so got one that doesn't drop to bits. A 'few' other bits and pieces as well. I asked for Lakeland vouchers from a few people at birthday/Christmas, so that softened the blow. I economised by not having a cup of tea. MS is taking my MIL, if she gets a ride out she always gets a cuppa/lunch for us! She's away at the moment so that was no good.

I also got a non stick pastry mat. I used to have a tupperware one, but it delaminated and went rather disgusting and not at all flat. How does anyone stop tortillas sticking to the rolling pin? I keep using loads of flour, but ds doesn't like them floury and in any case that makes a mess of the griddle!

HAd to get a new rolling pin, I have my grandmother's glass one (long story...well when I was young we lived in the tropics. My mother had a glass rolling pin that had a bung -what am I on about , she still has it, we were there '61-'64 - in each end, idea being you could put ice in to keep your pastry cool. Anyway, she got one for grandma, which I inherited)

It was driving me mad chinking away on the simulated granite work tops. It's always irritated me, as the 'working bit' was too short, the bungs at the ends being narrower.

did you know (I didn't til my mother who doesn't miss a trick told me!) that if you buy at the shop, you can get the same freebie they offer on the website or catalogue once you've spent a certain amount - you do have to ask for this though I've found. I roll dough using oil instead of flour - it stops the dough being toughened by adding new flour that won't have developed as much gluten, and stops it sticking. I just rub a teaspoon over the surface and the pin and roll. Don't know if it will work with tortillas but may be worth a try.

Thanks for this. I have tried it on with the freebie thing in the past and more recently not been successful with this.

Tortilla manufacture seems to be a popular current activity for me at the moment! Kids love 'em and I worked out how cheap they are. yesterday's batch were garlic and herb. Got ds to griddle as I rolled, as it's a long job otherwise.

Oh... don't think of it as a treat! My DH doesn't regard a new power tool or something for work on the house as a 'treat', he regards it as essential! Household equipment should never be regarded as a 'treat' item. It was a replacement for a worn out item.

So far so good with the Bamix. I made mushroom soup this afternoon and it whizzed it without spraying it all over, the Cheapo one that I had wasn't good in that dept! Then I thought I would test the little grinder gizmo that comes with it. I was amazed at how efficiently it dealt with 1 large and 3 small cloves of garlic. I wouldn't normally use something for that, only a knife, but just wanted to see what it was made of! When i do a Madhur Jaffrey recipe and it calls for 397 cloves of garlic!

The other thing is that it isn't very noisy, at least in puree mode. I haven't tried the other bits yet.

I've had a bamix for over 9 years and it's brilliant ! I use it mainly for liquidising soups but was planning on using it for diet deserts.

Does anyone have any recipes ?

    hi there

I am addicted to making the flour tortillas :rotfl: luckily hubby and I are addicted to eating them :T .. mine don't stick  but you could try placing the dough between to layers of cling film and rolling..then it shouldn't stick ;) , i wonder if having a wooden rolling pin makes a difference  ... i have declared that im having a tortilla press next time hubby wants to treat me ;) -i was trying to resist -but i have resisted long enough now :p

oooohhh a proper old fashioned rolling pin -i would love one like that -im a sentimental old fart :p ..... my mum used to have a plastic one years ago that the end screwed off for filling with cold water -the same idea..but my nan used to have one of the glass ones...until it rolled off and smashed on grandads foot :rotfl:
