                    Hi,
Can anyone give me some advice.
I have recently resigned from my job after 3 years with the same employer. However my final salary was seriously delayed in getting to me. I was contacted today and informed that apparently there has been an accounting oversight and I've infact been paid too much for the last 5 months. So my final pay packet is £700 short of what I was expecting.
I'm obviously pretty annoyed about this... I wasn't aware I was being overpaid and now have to take a £700 hit all in one go because the company accountant 'got it wrong'. Something to do with PAYE tax, I don't know. It doesn't seem fair and has come at a bad time.
How can I find out if this is right and what should I do?
Thanks.

You need to know what your gross pay should have been for the months in question and what your final tax code was. Then you can go back and use tables to see what should have been deducted.
Regarding taking the money back all at once, have a look at your T&C of employment (written particulars) to see if they have reserved this right.0

To be honest I don't even think I have a relevant contract anymore. The company were very slack at this type of thing. I will get back to them and ask for confirmation of my gross pay and final tax code though, thanks.0

Probably best getting in contact with the HMRC aswell.0

You do need your gross salary and your tax code, then hop on this website http://www.listentotaxman.com/ this should give you a good indication of what tax you should be paying.
In my experience when a company has over paid (it has happened to me) they are well within their rights to get the money back. However, some companies will offer a payment plan instead of taking the lump sum.

Thanks, just another thing to take up my day when I'm trying to get a business off the ground...
Appreciate the advice though, sounds like I might need the services of an accountant too.
 Cheers.0
