Mobile Engineer Tax back

I've been told recently (by a few guys that i work with) that i can claim tax back for a few things such as washing of my work uniform and i should get a tool allowance of £100 a year.
Also i have been told that because i'm a mobile engineer and travel the country with work then i can claim tax back for lunches and things that i buy at work...within reason though.
2 of the guys at work have claimed and have claimed back a considerable amount as they have claimed back 6 years in total.
Has anyone heard of this???

HMRC has standard expense allowances for most trades, including engineering. The rates are published on HMRC's website and you can claim going back 6 yrs.
If you have had to provide your own subsitance costs, then you can claim a deduction for these as well, but how are you going to prove it after all these years?

no i have been put in touch with a tax inspector that has set up business on her own, helping people to claim back tax. when i spoke to her last night she said that i can claim for food llowance of 8 pounds per day as i dont have a permenant place of work ( im mobile enginner) i can claim for my overalls being washes and a tool allowance.
She is very confident that she can get me money back and that it is all above board... She has had many successful cases. I shall let you know of any developments.
  • sounds good as i am a mobile engineer - use a company supplied car etc and pay for hoovering, washing etc.

also spend a load on food and fuel!

you'll have to ley us know the outcome

My hubby is a mobile network engineer and as you well know pays very high tax due to a damm company car that i consider part of his tool box.
