I moved out of home in September, though I have now moved back in with my dad to save some money, but unfortunatly our landlord is selling my previous property & under the terms of the contract I am liable for rent until he is happy for me to stop paying (when its sold!)

Why do you have to pay rent for a property that you no longer occupy? I'd get legal advice on this too if you are going to get legal advice. You must be able to give notice that you are cancelling the contract. Have you checked the contract ?

we cancelled approx a month into a 6-month contract, which states that the contract may only be cancelled at the landlords discretion. He agreed to let us move out & we assumed that the property would be re-let within weeks. However the landlord then decided that he wanted to sell the property, which obviously takes a lot longer, and theres not alot I can do about it as he appears to be acting within contract. I could demand to live in the property, but then id be liable for all the bills myself as my flatmate wouldnt want to live there again, and i'd already arranged everything with my dad & moved out before i found out he was selling the property. Crap situation!

Interesting to read about your landlord - gave me shivers reading it. I entered into a contract last year, and the landlord (who is also friend) decided she wanted to sell the property, so had to give me 2 months notice - in accordance with a short term lease (mention assured tenancy or something). I would highly recommend CAB - or possibly local council - sounds a bit like the landlord is getting money out of your situation. I don't know how much the law differs here in Scotland, but sounds like the landlord is milking this to get money out of you!!!!!!!! Good luck!
