Doing up a property two years ago, I put a bar of four 50w spots in the small kitchen & was totally gobsmacked by the poor light they gave. Another trip to B&Q and 4 inset ceiling spots later, the light was satisfactory. So it should have been, with 800w being consumed! I made a mental note that in my own house I'd never use these things. Talk about a victory of style over substance.....0

Talk about a victory of style over substance.....
I'm 49 years old, just did a mental count and I have lived 8 houses and 2 flats. Last October I moved into a house with a L shaped living room that has two lights hanging from the ceiling. In 1999 I lived for a few months with my son and DiL, and their living room was also L shaped with two lights.
Apart from those two times, I have never lived in a house/flat where any room had more than one light. And since 1999 I have not lived in a house/flat that contained a light shade.
I just can't see the need for fancy lighting.0
