Varifocal v Standard Lenses

Speak to your optician about 'mono-vision' glasses, it is where there is a distance lens in one side and a reading lens in the other, I was faced with the on-off problem before I got mine and I have been using them for just over 2 years with no problem, none of the messing about trying to tilt your head at the right angle to see out of the right part of the lens, they are just worn as normal glasses and the brain adjusts to suit.
The really good MSE thing about them is that they are single vision lenses so there is nothing extra to pay like there is with vari or bi-focals.0 -
I never made a pair like that in my whole career. Never even heard of the concept. Not being able to see with both eyes would really annoy me, and probably not be very safe for driving etc.Speak to your optician about 'mono-vision' glasses, it is where there is a distance lens in one side and a reading lens in the otherBeen away for a while.0 -
I got mine from Specsavers and they were recommended by the optician, he said it was a concept taken from contact lenses where it apparently is quite common.Running_Horse wrote: »I never made a pair like that in my whole career. As I said previously, I have been wearing them for over 2 years with no problems of any kind, I can read, watch tv, operate and drive without having to change my specs, the brain adjusts and I am not even aware of it, it is not like I have to close one eye to see up close and the other to see far away, it just happens.0 -
Having mono lenses is very common when it comes to contacts so I cant see why it wont work with glasses. May be the perfect solution to you.
I have varifocals and spend more hours then is good for a person on staring at my pc and tbh you dont get as good a correction with varifocals as you would with single lens glasses (IMHO) However I can manage pretty well reading, plucking eyebrows etc as long as I have a good light. The most important thing I have found is to keep the glasses is good working order, not letting them slip or be bent, they really do need to be fitted perfectly to get best results0 -
Mono vision is also very common with laser surgery, ie one eye for distance and the other for near0

monovision specs? it works with contacts but I am yet to come across monovision glasses!
Also if your using the computer for extended periods of time its prob not a great idea!!!
I'd go with varis or if its just computer work+close work maybe occupational varis-(they work for computer+reading not far away distances)
Good luck!0 -
Mono vision will reduce your depth perception. It may work ok in glasses if you only have a small difference between the distance and near prescription (ie in your forties). If you have a larger difference between the prescriptions (ie mid fifties +) then monovision will give you double vision.
I would definately recommend varifocals or bifocals over monovision. In fact I would never prescribe monovision even if the patient requested it.
Also, women adapt better to monovision in contact lenses than men. Something to do with one side of the brain being more dominant.

If your eyes aren't working together - they're working against each other. You have got to be pretty desperate to put with monovision specs, laser treatment or contact lenses.Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.
