Compensation for Child Benefit disc loss?

I did do a quick search on MSE and couldn't find anything (famous last words ) but wondered if any of you read the article in the Daily Mail yesterday about claiming compensation from the Government for losing the discs containing child benefit information?
It says that a company in Newcastle are selling packs for £5.99 but I wondered if it is something we could do for free. I managed to get my bank charges back myself so would like to try for this too.
Here's a link to the article for any of you interested.

I saw this too and was wondering exactly the same. The article did say that they would have to be found guilty of a data protection breach. Whilst it would appear obvious they are, this could be the sticking point.
Anyone know how we go about doing this?

I don't see the point unless your bank account was fraudently used as a result if you do win you pay more in taxes and it sounds to be honest petty.
If you have lost money from your account that is different but they did send out advice sheets and who to contact if that was the case.0 -
I agree with Rayday... if you weren't affected then what is there to claim back???Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Compensation for what? Ok, the government messed up but does that mean we should try to grab money for nothing and line some pond life's pocket who's decided to capitalise by selling information packs?
