    Deliberate deprivation of assetts would only apply if your mum went into a home and couldn't pay her own fees.
    Yes this is what I was referring to.
    As she is 80 then this has to be a concern for the future.

    I am afridd I missed the fact that it was £1K per month and thought it was a one-off payment (totally mis-read by me).

    Yes I do think deprivation of assets is something to be conserned about if this is going to be an on going thing.

    If your mother gievs you £48K over 4 years and then can't pay for care, then the local authority may be want the money back, so it could be seen as illegal deprivation by them.
    There is no time limit on how far back they go.
    There was one case in the news where a house that was given away was taken back after 18 years.

    A loan would be my suggestion if this is just to tide you over for a while.
  • thanks for all that information - certainly food for thought. My mother has got a lot of cash in the house and I have tried and tried to get her to do something with it - I think perhaps she has been stashing it for just this occasion.
