Standing Orders - Can I claim back over payments?

Hi not sure if this has been posted before but couldn't find anything on it.My employer set up a standing order for wages to go into my bank account each month. A few years ago the bank started pay an extra amount in my bank account which I honestly believed was a pay increase from my employer so never questioned it. Then this year I had a letter from my bank HSBC stating that they had made mistake with the standing order and that I was to repay the money. It totalled over £10,000 which I do not have to re-pay them. They gave me two options, either I pay a monthy installment or I go bankrupt. This is obviously something I want to aviod. If anyone has any information or help on what I can do I would be very grateful. Is the bank able to reclaim all of these extra payments? Is there a cut off point for the time that the claim back from? (as with the bank charges) Is there anyway I can stop this or contest?HELP PLEASE!!
