  • I handcuff myself to lamp posts so I don't spend money. Admittedly I don't have to do it naked, but I find it's a good way of meeting women. :)

I have a piece of paper saying "MARCH 2009" in big letters that I keep in my wallet :) That's my debt free date (hopefully), but I'm trying to make it sooner.

Go for a walk. Find a local park or woods and just go for a walk.

You have already hit on free museums, art galleries, the library etc
Have you checked to see if your library does magazines swaps? Mine does.
Also look on their notice boards, they frequently have free clubs or events to attend. Mine had a free late night ghost walk around my local town, with a fab tour guide...after been scared half to death...me and the O/H took a flask of hot coffee and some sandwhichs and ate them on the midnight bus home...it was really fun and only cost the bus fayres.

Do you like chess? Maybe you could find a chess club, or card playing club to join.

Here's a link to play free gameson the internet -http://www.miniclip.com/games/en/

Do you have a local park you can go to? I have been known to sit on the swings and listen to my mp3 player...particularly when I need some thinking time.
Do you have a partner/friend/kids that you can go on a picnic with?

That's all I can think of at the moment.

    Best wishes Bam x
  • Whenever I'm tempted to spend money on something I would like but don't really need, I try to work out how much it's worth in terms of my working hours. Ie, how many hours I'd have to work to earn it, going by my salary. For example, I'm a nursery nurse and only earn about £6 an hour. So if I see a nice sparkly going out top in New Look which is say £18, thats the equivelant of 3 hours work for me. Is that top worth me looking after a room full of under 2's for 3 hours? If I decide no (which I usually do!) then I don't buy it. A glossy magazine can cost £3.80 now - that's nearly 40 minutes of my working time to buy it!! It does make you think twice.

This is a really good technique and it does work. I did it the other night when the OH wanted to eat out or get kebabs or something and it puts it all into perspective!

I had some good advice given to me from a docaster man a few years back while on holiday in Gt Yarmouth. I was moaning about the weather and that it was costing me more money to find things to do. He said

"If you stop it costs you money, so! don't stop."

his wife said that he'd walked her round all day and was knackared to which he replied Yes but I didn't spend any money!

I've followed his advice and believe me it works;)
