Washing machine door won't open

I have a Zanussi Aquacycle and after finishing a wash, I now can't open the door at all. I have tried turning it off at the mains but to no avail. Any ideas?

Try putting it through the spin cycle again. Ours does this occasionally and gets confused.

  • Sometimes it will open after leaving it standing for a while. The machine will need looking at though as there's likely to be a door interlock or pressure system fault.

If you use it again, it will happen again :(

I have a similar problem and it only opens when it is switched off. Have you tried it when it is switched off for a while as mine only opens when this is the case.

Some machines have a way of opening it manually - have a look at the manual - otherwise, you'll need to take the top off and see if you can manually open it from the inside - DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE CONFIDENT AND THEN ENSURE THAT IT IS UNPLUGGED FROM THE MAINS.

    Competant and confident?

Then isolate the machine and take the lid off, usually 2 screws at the back and the lid slides forward and up.
Stand at the front, push the drum back and this should allow you to see the door lock.
If it has a pressure switch there will be a rubber tube going to it. providing the machine is completely empty of water, you can pop this off and the lock will release.
If it is a bimetal strip type, which times out after 30 secs usually, sometimes a jiggle of the lock casing will release it, but it will need replaced and that needs the door to be opened (design flaw there).

If the lock itself is toast, with the right tool you can pop the catch out, open the door and replace it, but this requires a little experience.

I don't endorse doing any of the above and for heavens sake make sure it is unplugged, but I hope it helps anyway. :)

As stated ,on a lot of machines the door will not open if there is still water in machine. A Zannusi should have a filter on the front of the machine. Have you taken it off. If not the filter may be blocked stopping the water from pumping out.

I do not advice you to take the lid or back off unless your are a competent person. There have been a few fatalities over the years with people working on W/Machines, even qualified personel.
