We have a couple of apple trees in the back garden, and there are hundreds of apples on the ground. They are only small, but are very juicy, but a little sour, fine to eat. Many are bruised ,but many perfect.I hate to waste food, but just dont know what to do with so many, the kitchen table is full! They're a bit small to be preparing so many to cook, I dont realy like cider! Does anyone have any ideas, if only the best way to store them,it woul be appreciated, I've already taken 3 wheelbarrow fulls up the garden to rot, seems a shame.
Every day theres another bag full! Also while I'm on the garden subject does anyone know if theres anything that I can do to revive a very old raspberry patch? We've been renting this property for 5 years now and theres a huge area of raspberries which has never fruited properly, they just getone mini ball of fruit ,they clearly need thinning out and prunning but not sure if we can ever expect decent fruit of them, any tips?thanks in advance.

Rather than waste them, you can ring your local hospice and ask them if they can use them in their kitchens !!They are always glad to use apples, plums etc - it saves them money and they are very grateful for that!0

Can't answer your question but have you thought of asking this on old-style as it is where most of the recipes go.0

RASPBERRIES.. Go out and prune them all to ground level now. In the spring they will put forth new stems and lots of raspberries
APPLES make some wineNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
We put a box of apples on the wall at the front of the house with a note saying please help yourself, leave a few carrier bags there as well. They soon go.0

Only thing I know about storing apples is that they shouldn't touch each other.
Maybe your local market will have some of those bumpy sheets of card that they get their apples on, otherwise use sheets of newspaper to seperate all apples in a large box and store in a cold place (garage or shed).Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
My parents have apple trees and keep the apples in the loft on the insulation - it's cool up there and easy to separate them out.
You need to keep an eye on them though - you don't want mouldy apples everywhere! But they should last a good while.0 -

I know we're all meant to be a money saving gang BUT the bottom line is - that you really don't want to be bothered with them - they're small, and a nuisance , so why don't you take them to the hospice - that way, you're benefiting others and you'll feel SOOOOO much better than if, at the end of the day , they go rotten in your loft, get maggots, smell, etc in your loft where you're BOUND to forget about them!
Come on- you got them for free.......
Let's look at them as apple sauce at Xmas/New year /strudel/ pie ..............................................0 -
TRY AN ADD IN YOUR "FREE ADDS" FREE TO TAKE AWAY. OR RING THE "W.I." PEOPLE LIKE THAT SOME ONE WILL BE GLAD OF THEM. I KNOW SIMON AT THE DONKEY SANCTARY LOVES APPLES!0

I was also going to suggest taking them to a local horse / donkey sanctuary or maybe the local zoo? Some animals love apples!
I wouldn't really give them away for human consumption - I know they're free but if they're a little sour then they may give bellyaches even when cooked (I know!!).
I think the horse or donkey sanctuary is a nice idea.Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you![/SIZE]0
