Help/Advice on a missed recorded delivery please

This is probably a lost cause but whilst away on holiday, a recorded delivery item was sent to my house. My neighbour was checking the mail for me but unfortunately they ended up in hospital. I am sure that this is a comp win but as I was unable to pick it up within the 7 days it has been returned to sender. The people at the sorting office could not tell me who sent the item and when I have tried to use the on-line recorded delivery tracking it just says that the item has been returned and to wait at least 2 days before tracking its return (this was on the 30th January and the return information hasn't changed since).

Can anyone offer any advice or should I give up trying (and hope that it wasn't anything exciting!).

Thank you
