The recipe for fake mayo was interesting! Just out of curiosity, I might have a go at that. :)

I too have loved the wartime kitchen and garden progs on yesterday - freeview 12 for those who dont know.
as i said before - my mum and nan trained me well! dont waste, make do and mend - and dont ever ever spend more than you earn!!!!
oh and - buy quality goods - they last longer and give more value than cheap shoddy stuff!
my granddad worked for an abbatior during the war - but did the family have extra meat rations? no they didnt!! the rules were so stringent the men couldnt even get a bit of extra meat!!! my nan had to queue with the rest of them at the butcher and put up with a lot cos most of the other housewives thought she would be getting freebies - drove her nuts!!!

I have to say, I really enjoyed the slow pace of the series. It made for very relaxing viewing.

I liked the idea of using grated potato as a fat alternative in pastry. Apparently it tasted good and sounds like a healthier alternative.

I've had a look on-line and can't find a fat-less potato pastry recipe so far

    POTATO PASTRY

    6oz flour
    ½ tsp salt
    1 ½ oz marge
    6oz mashed potato

    Rub fat into flour
    Add to mashed potato
    Mix thoroughly
Add a liitle water to bind
form into a stiff dough and roll out

This pastry does not reheat well because it becomes very dry

I managed to watch the rabbit being skinned - but we ate loads of rabbit when I was growing up - I balked at the pig's head though: I think the fact it was half a head with a few teeth still in the jaw did it :o

I was a dab hand at helping my mother make brawn from a pigs head and no child balked at that sort of food as we were brought up to be grateful for whatever we had. I still remember the sticky feel of the meat and stock in my fingers. Pigs head was a staple for many years after the war

Also scratching around the recipe books for a nice cake when all we had was one egg. It was very difficult then if you lived in a bombed out town with no garden, like we did. It was so much work for the parents, dads who worked all hours to scratch a living and mums who had to make do day after day and that meant making clothes from clothes which had already been used to almost worn out and sewing sheets side to middle, cutting newspaper squares for toilet paper and so on.

As well as washing and scrubbing terry nappies every day and somehow trying to get everything dry. The ceiling airer was constantly full of clothes, unless summer was hot and even then you couldn`t hang that much in a small back yard. Yes camaraderie was wonderful but it was a life of sheer drudgery. The prog is great but it really wasn`t romantic and slow like on tv

I think I expressed myself badly: I eat brawn with pleasure, but I am squeamish about food with half a face.

I thought the same, looked quite nice, sort of a fine potato salad.
