IVA for a dummy

Sorry if this is the stupidest post of the day, but despite routing through reams and reams of info on IVAs I just can't get my head around them.
Has anybody got some real life experience of IVAs? - are they much different from bancruptcy (sic?) - what are the pros and cons?
