when tesco self scan beeps with a coupon....

anyone any idea why a tesco self scan till would allow £2.25 in coupons (2 coupons) for a £6.37 shop one day (35%) and the same till the next day would beep for approval on a 3rd coupon making a total of £2.75 off a £8.13 shop which is a lower percentage ie 33%. The member of staff didn't question it and just approved it but don't want to make a name for myself as I go in most days (its only round the corner and I can't carry a lot at a time as 8 months pregnant!).

It sounds as if that SS machine is preset to ask for authorisation for a third coupon (no matter what the %). I think stores can set the limit themselves so not all SS are the same.

I always suggest people with lots of coupons don't use the SS anyway, a nice SA will scan a lot more if they are all different coupons & in date, non-store specific etc. No embarrassing 'beeping' of the till except for the nice constant scanning noise....:D

Unfortunately the SS machines have been abused in the past and so are set according to that stores policy. If two coupons scan without approval, stick to two.

Also I know that security keep a much closer eye on the SS tills, so they probably are aware of you already, but as long as you stick with the rules, they're ok with it.

Next time you're at the checkout and you hear the beep, think of the fun you could be having on Supermarket Sweep! :rotfl: :o

Seriously though, I can't work out any pattern with the SS in my local Tesco...to be honest I find a manned checkout much easier and quicker and ony use the SS when the other tills are all busy (Plus you don't get Till Spits from SS)

  • Hi

The Self service tills seem to be programmed to need approval when a certain percentage or certain number of coupons are used. Looks like 3 in your store I think different stores are set at different levels.

I find it better to go to a normal checkout if using many coupons. It feels more open that way and they can accept coupons without the till questioning it.

  • I put £10 worth of coupons through SS yesterday, about 13 coupons. There was a very nice young girl supervisor stood nearby, and she didnt have to authorise any of them. After I had finished shopping, I had a word with her, and said "I have just used some coupons, and that was brilliant, thank you, and while I am here could you tell me your stores coupon policy?" She just said that I could use as many as I want! So, I suggested, if I had £90 worth of shopping and £80 of coupons, would that be ok?? Yes, she said!

See you next week was my reply!!!!!

Do you think that the area that the Tesco is in could have any bearing on the particular stores coupon policy.
I ask this because this particular Tesco is very near a large Asda Walmart, and they are both in the catchment of a large, very deprived housing area.

Been to my local store twice in the last week and used about £8 worth of coupons on both occasions (only £25-£30 shops). In total was about 6 or 7 coupons.

As has been said before, I think it depends on the store's policy.

However, at the same store, when I went through a checkout with an assistant on, she only took one voucher out of the 8 that I gave her ! Self-scan for me from now on !!! lol

My tesco take most coupons as long as they are not somerfield and that is only recently - they used to take everything. They don't like book vouchers either but some sa's take them still. I try to mix up what I have and use a lot fo the coke ones as they are redeemable by the store until May 2008.
