Home Finance Debt

Hi. I'm new to the site so forgive me if I'm posting on the wrong forum. I wanted to ask something on behalf of my mother. She got a letter last year saying she owed money for Home Finance, she called the number given to ask what the debt was for but they couldn't tell her. This debt was from 1998 and they contacted her in 2007 about it. She has been paying £65 approx every month for a debt she can't remember. What I was wanting to ask is...should there not have been a time limit on them contacting her regarding this debt? We are in Scotland so I'm not sure if the law is the same here as it is in England.

The debt should be statute barred after 5 years of not acknowledging it in writing. So if she didn't acknowledge the debt from 1998 til 2007 either by making a payment or in writing, they the debt would have been statue barred and she shouldn't have had to make any payments.0

Thanks for your reply. Should she stop making payments now and contact someone? Or will she just have to keep up the repayments?0
