if you contribute an extra 1920 (i.e. in addition to the 3,000) then you would receive tax relief at 40% so in effect you only pay 1152 for the pension benefit of 1920.

There used to be limits depending on age but I think that all disappeared with A-day, perhaps someone else can confirm.
For most people there are practical limits, so it doesn't make a huge diffeernce.
this is quite correct... subject to certain lifetime contributions limits, you can in fact contribute your entire salary to a pension scheme although its unlikely that an employer will allow this.0
