2008 - Year Of The Handcuffs

I have decided that to help me to stop spending money that I don't need to I am going to visualise the 8 of 2008 as a pair of handcuffs. ;)

So each time I go shopping I shall slap the old cuffs on (mentally that is!) before I buy.

I tend to write a lot of cheques also, and sometimes I forget and must admit get into trouble occassionally so this will be another thing to be looked at.

My OH is as bad. I only have to mention something - eg would like a newer car - and he will start looking on the net at new cars and finance etc and it drives me mad.

He also used to nag me about taking out another loan to pay off debts but he eventually dropped that one as I favoured Martin's advice over his.

He thinks I'm seeing someone else called Martin - PMSL :rotfl:

Anyway does anybody else do anything similar to help stop yourself spending money?

forgetting your cards and wallet usually works for me....or treat yourself as a child with pocket money....except that you have to spend it on "not fun things".

We're great at making kids budget but what's the difference with us grown-ups apart from that we can borrow? and are deemed responsible to do so?

Handcuffs is a neat idea though!
For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 2007
  • My problem is that when it comes to money, I can act like a kid !!!

Tantrum child in me wants things ... and buys them when I want. Someone coined an interesting phrase the other day 'Financial Toddling' .... that's what I'm doing until I learn new habits :D

  • Yep I like that phrase 'financial toddling'. I like to think of myself as pretty mature and wise for my years in many ways, but when it comes to money then I guess there is a bit of child in me.

I convince myself that I 'need' something when really I could manage without it perfectly well. We only actually need food, water and a roof over our heads, but that can be a difficult concept when the spending demon has me in its grip!
