When you apply for credit it leaves a mark against your credit file that a search has been carried out and for what purpose.

This isn't really a bad thing unless you're applying for lots of credit as any future lender will wonder why you keep getting turned down. I don't know off-hand exactly how long they last for but I've seen credit searches with them several months old.

Preferred Mortgages is the name of the lender - you can only apply for their products by going through an IFA. I have the product range of just about every sub-prime lender there is piled up on my desk (there's a lot of them, it's very messy) and to the best of my knowledge there's no alternative.
