Paypal scam email? Maybe not - I've been stung!!!

I've just received an email from paypal confirming my payment to webmaster/RapidShareAG for 5.99 euros. This was followed by another paypal email stating that my access has been limited due to suspicious activity.

Here we go I thought, another scamming email and there's no way I was going to click onto the link to their "site".

However, I logged onto paypal using the proper channels and the transaction was there. I then logged on to my credit card site which confirmed that the transaction had been put through!

I've contacted both paypal and my credit card company, cancelling my card and disputing the transaction.

Please be extra careful if you use paypal - I work in fraud prevention and am NEVER taken in by scam emails but it looks as if someone has actually hacked into paypal. Never click a link in an email but please check your accounts and credit/debit card accounts linked to them. I know 5.99 euros is a small amount but I feel really violated!! :(

Sorry to hear that, but at least it was for small amount and you spotted it fairly quickly!
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.
  • So sorry to hear this. There are some nasty people about.

One thing I would say you need to be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN OF - and that is that you do not have that same password (the paypal one) for anything else as they could hack into all sorts of your accounts...
If you DO have the same password for anything else, change it asap!

Just changed mine - they would have had a field day with us as that password is for ALL our accounts!!! Thanks very much
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:
