Is she trying to save money (for a bought lunch, actually £2 a day is pretty cheap) or trying to eat healthier? Because the solution is different, depending on which it is.

  • How about a box of 'cup a soups', and a loaf of bread / bag of rolls bought at the start of the week?

You can make a soup in less time than a cup of tea :)

I have access to a proper kitchen at work which is lucky because I am knackered at the moment being 7 months pregnant. I also have nearly sole use of the fridge freezer at work. This is what I do.....

I keep a loaf of bread in the freezer at work. (You could keep this at home and grab a couple of slices as you leave.) In my locker I have cup-a-soup, tins of soup, tins of makeral and sardines (well I am pregnant) and sachets of tuna. The small 3pk weighwatcher tins are yummy. In the fridge I have soft cheese, margarine, (jam for mid morning snacks :o) and enough yoghurt/jelly for the week. I grab fruit from the bowl on the way out.

If I have soup I normally defrost some bread in the toaster to go with it. If I want a sandwich I normally grab some fresh slices on the way out.

I know this isn't very old style but I'm always too knackered in the evenings and I get up late in the mornings. It's cheaper and healthier than going to the chip shop.

If your friend has a car she could leave some stuff in the boot as well.
  • I like the idea of doing Jacket potatoes for lunch. Is there any merit in me doing them in the oven at home and then reheating them in the microwave at work to get that lovely crispy feel?
  • This is what I do... I buy soup from the chiller cabinet that's in date until friday, or tinned soup. I take breadsticks or carrots with philly/houmous for a snack plus yogurt or fruit. I buy bread rolls and freeze them and take a frozen roll with me in the morning - it's defrosted by lunch. I sacrifice variety for ease :) hth

davetaylor I think they'd taste much nicer if you precook them but I don't think they'd stay crispy.

When I take a packed lunch it usually consists of some rice cakes and a tub of hummus, and some fruit/yoghurt. The rice cakes and hummus are suprisingly filling. Wholemeal crisprolls are a nice change and go well with a tub of fresh salsa or guacamole.

what about instant noodles - not from normal supermarkets but from an asian supermarket if you have one near you. they are alot tastier and prices start at 35p/pk, ones in tubs cost more but still under £1

I have been doing for the last few years (as a student). It comes in few variations:
    1) Bread and supermarket coleslaw / sandwich filler - bring a whole loaf of bread and whole tub of coleslaw to the office. Put the coleslaw in the fridge and it should last a few days.
    2) Tomatoes / cucumber / carrots with cheese and salad dressing (use squeeze bottle) and bread - same idea.
    3) Supermarket Cous cous - self explanatory, it may even be possible to use dried cous cous (just add hot water).
    Hope it helps.
