A trifle tropical?

Hi
I have to make cake or pud for the kids' Morris side Ceilidh on Saturday night. DS has requested that I make trifle. Am not very good at trifle, in spite of being an accomplished cook... or at least I could do trifle if budget were no expense spared (fresh rasps, macaroons etc etc!)
So far I have... some bananas (good to use those, the kids get fed up with banana muffins!) will make a fat-free sponge, have lots of jam, what about a mango (was 39p at Lidl, have to pass again later, so will see if they still have them), good old Bird's custard.
Do I need anything else? I might make individual ones, trifle always looks so sad on a buffet when a couple of portions have been taken. Could make smallish, so that folks having more than one pud don't leave it. What do you think?
Also, with jelly or without. I prefer without, but I'm not eating it......We aren't going to the ceilidh, DH is employee of the month and has £100 to spend on a meal out. Someone jokingly said he could submit a Screwfix receipt instead LOL! We're going to Loch Fyne.
editing.... have some satsumas past their peak.

Your trifle sounds OK. I like jelly in mine though. It might help to keep it together especially if you make small ones. Gosh you are good making the sponge to go in it.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

are you using real cream for the top or dream topping or anything else? Sounds lovely so far, think the indiviual ones are a good idea too and yes I'd use jelly0

I was thinking of doing a 1 or 2 egg fat free swiss roll type sponge. Thought I might try cooking it in the microwave. i've done conventional sponge in the microwave for treacle sponge etc. it doesn't matter if it's a bit dry, after all.
Has anyone ever done this?"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Well, in the end I had the oven on anyway for some other stuff, so just shoved the sponge in as well."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Trifle update... decided to go without jelly, as dd is vegetarian! Had forgotten that limitation, jelly isn't something I usually do at home.
Photo below if it's worked! Under the custard and cream is sponge, a little jam, mango, banana and a little orange juice to moisten. DS asked what I had put in as the wet bit was nice! There were a couple left... but only because there were so many puds taken to the event I believe. Kids heard folks saying they were nice. If I had done a big dish, the last 2 portions would have looked wrecked and probably binned."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Thanks Carrie, I keep posting pictures in the hope that others will do the same, I find other peoples' photos of baking very inspirational!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I've just had a thought..... My dear Gran would have said "well look after it, it's in a strange place!"
I have the rest of the trifle sponge left over, more mango, more banana, more jam and the remainder of the cream in the piping bag in the freezer.
A friend is taking ds to Chester Zoo with her lads tomorrow and I rashly invited them to tea, seeing as she will be out all day! Now wondering what to do. Instead of doing paper cups, could do little trifles in ramekins. Job nearly done!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Those trifles look pretty impressive to me for someone who can't make trifle! A homemade trifle sponge to whit - wow, well done.
Good for you, that you're getting another 'go' out of the ingredients. It reminds me of when my children were small and we used to go to stay with my mum. She lived 80miles away so we used to stay for a week of two at a time. She would start off with a pudding - say half a jelly whippped with evaporated milk. The next day the other half of the jelly would have part of a tin of fruit in. The day following would see trifles with a bit of the fruit juice on some stale cake dressed up with some of the remaining fruit and so she would go on through the week. She was a wonderful cook my mum, truly OS and her kitchen was only 6ft square, but O my word, the meals that came out of it.
I will try to get some pictures posted just as I can get DS to help me get my head round the technology.
