A&L Pushy PPI Salesman

Hello this is my first post starting a thread but have been reading the boards for a while and love this site.

I am planning to buy a new car and have been researching loans and the like for sometime. Had decided on Moneyback which are an Alliance and Leicester company which I felt comforted by as they are a large company. However when organising my loan (£4k over 2 years!) I had a VERY VERY pushy salesman on the phone who was extremely sarcastic about my income/expenditure details (I'm an accountant and have a monthly budget and I KNOW what I can afford!). He really made me feel quite angry and pretty much said I would die so I HAD to buy the PPI.

I tried to point out that it was £4k over 2 years and if I was ill I could sell my car to pay it off. I have a large bonus coming from work so the car I'm buying will actually be more than the loan but he just would not listen.

I stood my ground and said no I did not want it and eventually he called me a risk (I know my credit rating does not say this!) and gave me the repayment each month and the rate. The PPI he wanted to sell me was £16 per month. I found PPI online for just £5 a month!!

As it was actually an ok rate and I dont' want a load of companies searching my credit profile I have actually accepted the loan documentation but just wondering if anyone thinks I should complain about my treatment during the phone call. I thought it would be a formality as I'd already filled out a form online but it was more like the Spanish inquisition.

I know I've not actually spent anything and I wont' get anything but it might make me feel better. I wish I had taken the man's (I feel like using another word!) name.

I think that not only should we make a stand and reclaim we should stand up and say NO to these companies trying to force us to take these products when we can organise them independently ourselves.

Thanks for listening to my moan!! If anything can make a difference it's the users of this website standing up to them all!!

xx Joanne

  • Hi Joanne

I had a very similar experience to you yesterday.

The advisor was beyond pushy, he was rude and insulting. I am also an accountant and know what my budget is.

What made me REALLY mad though was when I said to him that if I was unable to work it was my problem how the loan would be repaid and not his. He said "well what guarantee do we have if you don't take out the insurance???"
I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told that there weren't any on. He then became sweetness and light and put the application through without PPI.

Like you I didn't get his name, but I rang the number again and asked to be put through to a supervisor. Spoke to a team manager and complained about the pushy g1t's attitude, they found out who he was from their system. I specifically asked them to re-train him about credit law and if a customer did default on the loan there are several options open to them to reclaim their money.

Later on I got a phonecall from a senior team manager who was very apologetic. She said that they had listened to the call and that they were not happy with how he handled it.

Now I am in 2 minds about whether to stick with them (as I don't think it is an isolated incident) or go to Barclaycard for 23p a month more - the accountant part of me is pointing out that I will save £5 with A+L!!

OH also had a very pushy Indian woman in their call centre try and convince him for about 15 minutes (seriously) that he should take PPI. He was only putting a few extra thousand on his current loan so he could get a newer car.

    Very annoying!
  • Hi, Snap!!! I spoke to a salesman only yesterday at A&L. Hell, I felt like ending it all after listening to him" what if ". I am not an accountant, but I know what I can afford.(I am a fifty something proffesional) He asked which quote I would take, so I said the cheap one without insurance, short silence, then, "your application has been succesfull"! Woah!, hold on, I asked, what was the APR, he said 9.9%. I was hoping for nearer 6.7% as advertised. I then said no thanks, too late, the paperworks on its way, " when you recieve it just write back to cancell". T..t!!, I am so p...ed with these donkeys.I recieved the papers today + a note, still pushing insurance. I am not going to just forget this,I hope my cancelling of the offer does not go against my good credit rating, could you advise me on this point,?
