Late payment charges.

Hi
I haven't posted on here in a while as everything has been going okay...not good but okay. Until now.
We have a car loan through a car finance company which is due to end May 2009. When I went to the CAB for help with debt problems I rang and told them that we were having finacial difficulties due to my husband having to retire on medical grounds and I myself being on long term sick. I said we would try to maintain the payments but asked to change the payment date to coincide with our benefit money going into the bank.
They refused so I cancelled my direct debit and have paid on-line every month. I admit that some of these payments have been late but I told them of the difficulties we were having.
I then received a letter saying we owed £150 in late payment fees. I wrote to them once again and explained the difficulties stressing that all payments were up to date but heard nothing. I have now received a default notice for these late payment fees.
I have contacted them again and they said they have not received my letter and have asked me to write again.
Has anyone any idea where I stand on this. I really do not have this sort of money to spare, in fact I have NO money to spare and we are barely existing. I just want to know what happens now.
I would be really grateful for any advice. I guess it serves me right for thinking we were doing okay.
