Support local trade. If everyone did it, the price might go down ;)
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

When I had a milkman, he used to be able to do the 2 pint plastic bottles of milk which were cheaper than 2 pints of glass bottled milk and not much more than the supermarket. Thing was, he wasn't allowed to advertise this and so you only found out about it if you asked. Perhaps you could havea word with 'Steve' to see how you can save money and keep using your millkman?

We've had our local milkman for 37 years. He has just increased his price to 49P (9p dearer than Tesco) and I've been wondering whether to keep having milk delivered or buy milk with the weekly shop.

Even though the milk is much more expensive I just can't bring myself to cancel home deliveries. I'll just keep on paying.

Blimey, thanks, some reading to be done here eh?!

I do get the milk in plastic 2 pint cartons (and a cardboard 1 pint) because I did find the bottles went off quicker, plus they are easier to store in the fridge lying down if ness. My recycling accepts both containers too so that's good.

The milk is always on the step by 7-7.30am too, so I cannot fault Steve or the milk - it's purely just the cost.

Food (or drink! :D) for thought eh?!

We tried a milkman a few months ago.

Kids thought the milk tasted weird and it was more expensive.

It was a no brainer for me.

I shop weekly and buy what i need for the week usually two four pinters.

Dont go to shops inbetween so not spending extra.

I think for you OP its a tradition and you know Steve so id carry on with it.
  • Tell him you would like to support him but you are only prepared to pay 40p per pint ;)

Well done welshman10, I think that's a great idea. I stopped the milkman years ago for the following reasons:

    a. Too expensive
    b. Not very fresh, supermarket milk lasts seven days at the very least
    c. He did not collect the money at a regular time so bills mounted up
    d. I was drinking skimmed milk at the time and it used to freeze on the doorstep in the winter

I can buy all the milk I need for a week and fit it in the fridge but I know that some families could not because they use so much, freezing it sounds a good idea. Although, I'm not adverse to long life milk but I know not everyone likes it.

    1. they make great neighbourhood watch though!
people always look at the bottom line and forget to look at the added value
thats why this country has gone to the dogs
  • I started using a milkman approx 18months ago and yes the milk is more expensive but it's more convenient. I have two pints delivered three times a week and also buy 4 to 8 pints from Tescos every 1 to 2 weeks (which my milkman knows I do). I'm lucky that my milkman comes between 3am and 5am except every other Friday when he's collecting money. I also find that the milk lasts just as long as the supermarket milk does without going off. He's very jolly, loves his job and looks after you. He so reminds me of the milkman we had when growing up. Thanks Graham! So looks like I'm the exception to the rule as I'm very happy having a milkman.
