Who Will Job Centres Help?

I worked for JC+ until last September. Had been with them 27 years. I had the chance to take redundancy so grabbed it and ran. It may appear a soft option but over the years I tried to work in an over-bureaucratic system 'helping' people to find work, many of whom did not want to be helped to work they just wanted to be left in peace to live on benefits. Soul destroying for me and pointless for them. If you have a job already dont' expect help at the Jobcentre they have enough to do with the 1.8 million jobseekers, the 1 million 'Lone Parents' and the 2.7 million on Incapacity Benefit. The website, local papers and other job sites should have all you need. I had another job before I left and am still there. Much happier and now studying with the OU as well.0

I think they may have misunderstood you. I have recently contacted them about work and I am employed. They were very helpful with me.Paul_Varjak wrote: »I went into the local job centre today and was told that they do not help people look for work if they are already employed. They said they only help those on benefits. I pointed out that I am on Tax Credits, but that did not persuade them.
They said they can only offer help via the JobSeekers Direct number and the JobCentre website.
Surely that cannot be correct?0 -

Here here!
I had to fight to get onto a New Deal programme for self employment and now I am one of those who is considered not to be on JSA but getting a training allowance. At least I will be on benefits for 6 months whilst test trading and then I will go onto working tax credits instead - I will get more money and it will help me whilst I get my business off the ground.
One of my chums was unemployed and was offered a 3 month temporary contract and his jobcentre told him to stay on benefits when all he wanted to do was work - I thought the whole point of the jobcentre was to help someone find work not to suggest lounging about claiming benefits?

i have now signed on 5 times and not once have i had any job seeking advice! i have to fill in a log book of all my job search activities which they look at, usually without comment ! in fact on one occasion the only words exchanged were 'sign here'!! not even hello! how is it going, do you need any help etc!! made me laugh. i am lucky i do not need advice or help looking but if i did i wonder how helpful they would be! maybeyou have to be signing on for a certain length of time before they 'encourage' you
i find the jobcentre quite an intimidating and impersonal experience. i dared to ask my advisor one day how long would it take before i get my first payment and he just pointed towards the entrance and said 'theres phones over there if you have any questions'
i was asking HIM cos i thought he was my advisor! 0 -
i used to work in a minimum wage job, and spent the few days off i had (and half days) at the job centre, they were entertaining, the number of patronising remarks they gave me after the reply 'yes' came after they spat at me 'are you working?' was unbelievable. i thought about tattooing on my forehead 'workplace bullying has left me considering suicide now are you going to help me or not?'
it used to be hilarious because they wouldnt help you even when their terminals broke, in the end i found a job for myself and have been there 2 and a half years.things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then
