University Charges!

Hi,

I'm new to money saving expert so was wondering if anyone can give me some advice.

I graduated form uni 4 years ago, and have made it a New Years resolution to register as a nutritionist. I have recently contact my university to get hold of my old module outlies (which I need to prove my competency in Nutitioin) as I stupidly did not keep these! The University have come back to me and asked for a £50 admin charge to provide me with these details.

I feel very reluctant to pay this as I spend at lease £3,000 fees whilst studying there. However, I really need these details to register as a nutritionist! Can anyone give me some advice or their thoughts on this.

Thanks

C.

If you want it you'll have to pay it... £50 sounds very steep though.

Do you know anyone else who did the same modules who might have kept them?

£50 does sound a lot but if the module outlines have changed since you did the course and in 4 years they will have changed probably more than once then it can be quite a job to establish exactly which modules you did and to get the exact outlines out of archive.

Could you look back over your old notes and timetables to see what modules you did?

Maybe this is what you have binned, but we got a 'transcript' of results each year - could you have filed that with your certificate?

This would be a standard admin fee for the time it takes someone to make copies, pay for the paper and postage.

No different than if you want to get copies of hospital/dr's records they have right to charge you up to £50 admin fee.

I am not sure why you think because you paid fees of a £1000 a year should mean not have to pay to cover someone's time etc. A university does not run on fresh air. It costs a lot to run because of the number of staff and buildings. I suspect that your £1000 a year really did not cover the cost of all the resources that you used and had access to. Such as the Tutor, the computers provided by the dept. and the public access pc's supplied the uni's central computer services etc, etc etc.

I also suspect the fee is rather high to stop people making such requests.

I would use a different approach (if what you need is evidence of marks or tutor's reports rather than just a syllabus).

State that you want a copy of the information held as a subject access request under the Data Protection Act.

    According to:

    http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/library/data_protection/practical_application/subject_access_-_guide_for_data_subjects.pdf

"there is a sliding scale ranging from £1 to £50 (depending upon the number of pages to be provided)"

As I cannot imagine that the information you need would take up more than 1 page of A4 paper I cannot see how £50 is a reasonable charge.

If you just need a syllabus, I suppose you could try to contact your old personal tutor and ask them if they could dig one out for you...
