How do I find out Who I owe?... Please Help

Hello

I have a lot of Debts totalling more than £9000 from my time as a student (this is excluding my student loans which are occasionally taken from my monthly earnings) and have been running for years to avoid them, for many reasons.
Basically, I have come out of the wilderness now and want to begin to pay them back as I need to eventually get to a point where I can use debit/Credit cards again.

I am in a very stable Job and have enough money to start paying back things slowly. And obviously in doing this it will gradually improve my 'Credit Rating' and I can start to get myself back to being somewhere near fully functional.

Every free trial Credit check website asks for a credit/debit card number to verify who I am, I don't have either of these and haven't since 2002/3.

Is there a way I can get this information without a Credit/debit card?

I don't have any of my original correspondence with the debt collectors, and I have tried to get this information from the banks I originally had the debt with and there has been no response...

I am just desparate to get things back in order, and I understand my former irresponsible behaviour has gotten me into this mess, I just need a chance to get myself out of it...

If you got this far, thanks for reading any advice would be greatly recieved.

Cheers

Ray

    Hi Ray

I'm no expert but I believe that you can post a postal order to some of the credit referencing companies and they can post your credit report to you.

Someone will be along who knows the answer better than I (although I'm sure I've seen it in one of Martin's articles somewhere) but for the time being this will bump your question to the front page so one of the more knowledgable posters will see it (DFW moves soooooo quickly!)

    Good luck

Aha - knew it was here somewhere.

Try that page and scroll down to the Statutory £2 by post method.

    Hope that helps!

    Before you do anything.

Are these debts older than 6 years (5 years in Scotland)?

If so, they could no longer be enforceable and would not appear on your credit check.

Thanks for getting back so quickly,
I know there is a loophole, but think that is if there is no contact at all or admission of debts for a 6 year period, and I'm pretty sure I have been in contact in the last 4 or 5 years.

But may need to look into it a bit more.

The exact dates are a bit sketchy as it was a bad time for me.
Cheers, I will look into the loop hole, any info about it you have would be great

if they are not on any your credit checks, they will probably be over 6 years old. If they were defaulted over 5 years ago, they might be statute barred.

Acknowledgement has to be in writing or by payment.
