G E Money
I've got a car loan with GE Money. Last year there was a mix up over the direct debit mandate due to my changing banks. My account however is now up-to-date and has been for some time, however; GE Money now say that there are £115 of unpaid charges on my account and they will not relinquish their interest in my car after the loan has been paid until these charges are paid in full.
Can they do that?
Any advise greatfully accepted.

Hey Acki,
Nice guys at GE or what.
Essentially you need to request a breakdown of the charges, their origin and the full cost. If they are justified, as stated in your initial agreement, GE will see them as warranted and you may struggle to get them turned over.
However you can always plead your case and ask for them to be removed enclosing a explanation of your difficulties with the mandates. It never hurts to ask.

If the charges are a direct result of the change of banks, the new bank will have covered their butts by stating that you should ensure that you continue to make payments.
Can you get old bank and new bank to confirm dates responsibility for mandates were transferred and compare their answers?
If you can get old/new bank to admit that they had caused a delay then you may be able to ask them for compensation for consequential losses.
If you can get old/new bank to write to GE directly and confirm that this was through some sort of exceptional situation then you might just manage to muddy the waters enough to cause doubt on responsibility. GE will say you are regardless, but you might be able to put some doubt on that?"A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0
