Giving up smoking

I am giving up smoking next Monday! My husband is currently trying to stop smoking, he's going cold turkey!
I have set my date and was wondering what types of products people have tried/ which are a waste of money etc.
I figured out it was a more of a psycholigical than physical addiction with me as I quit when I got pregnant, but then started again really quickly after the birth as I enjoy the act of smoking/the people I smoke with.
I was thinking gum may be better than patches, as then there would be a burst of nicotine, rather than being 'topped up' all day. I have also moved to Caanada and so will not be able to go to the docs and get any of this on prescription. From a moneysaving point of view, obviously quitting smoking is going to be a huge huge improvement in our lives.
Any ideas on some products to try? What have people found is useful?
Thanks in advance, (I have looked through the Health board and can't seem to find another thread but I;m sure there's one somewhere!)
Thanks

There's one down in 'Discussion Time' (no I don't know why it's there either!) which you may find useful. Smoke-Free Wannabee
Some ideas there, I hope. Good luck!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Hi Broke
I have given up smoking using Zyban tablets, i have had no cravings and have been given up smoking for 9 weeks now, i stopped taking the tablets 4 weeks ago.
I know that Zyban has had some bad publicity but i have had no side effects apart from a few nights disturbed sleep (No nightmares just not being able to sleep) In the end i weighed up the pro's and con's of smoking and decided to give Zyban a try and it was the best decision i have ever made.
Hope all is well with you

Like Sue7 I also used Zyban. Its brilliant. I quit at the beginning of the year - I chose not to remember the day or month and I don't count how many weeks it has been as I feel the constant reminder causes me to have cravings.
The Zyban made quitting much easier. I didn't attend a quitters group as I didn't want a weekly reminder of the thing I was trying to forget, but I did have a one to one session with a quitters person. These are really good as they measure your monoxide levels and can use that to tell you how well you are doing. I would recommend using Quitters - Just give them a call and then they ask your GP to prescribe Zyban.
Its only now the cravings sometimes catch me unawares - But I never ever had a sneaky one.
All the best xxxx You will be fine I am sure.
The other benefit I found with Zyban was I lost my appetite to so it meant I actually lost weight. Although I have put a bit on now but it is well worth it to be smoke free.:heart2:Mum to my little Daisy 3 and Archie 1.:heart2:0 -
I gave up using patch's over 20 weeks ago, the trouble with gum I found is that you take it when you need a fag. When I needed a fag I was going to have a fag and not a peice of gumEgg Loan £15000

It is now 18 months since I gave up smoking:j I was a VERY heavy smoker, and my friends and family still can't believe I managed to do it. The first time I tried I was prescribed Zyban to which I had a terrible reaction, and had to come off it. Another year past before I tried again. This time I managed it with the help of Patches and the inhaler which has been my life line! in fact I still have it near in times of stress.... I wish you luck, you CAN do it............ I smoked 50 cigarettes a DAY I am ashamed to say.:eek:When man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0

3 years ago me and dh stopped. He used zyban and I used patches. Talk to an advisor to decide which method would be best for you as they are good at this. We also attended a group, but went to different ones. The group leader helped as they helped devise tactics for getting over any problems and told you what to expect as the days and weeks passed eg, coughing to clear the chest. One good thing that they did was tell you which chemicals are added to ciggies which does put you off quite a bit.
HTHThe best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0 -
I gave up 15 or 16 years ago now - and what did it for me was to wean myself down to Silk Cut or similar..... then I bought a pack of Woodbines and smoked one in a single drag.
Result: Puked my ring up big style, but never wanted another cigarette either. Chucked the 19 unsmoked Woodies out about 3 months later. There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0
