Higher rate tax

If you pay your entire income (less tax free allowance) into a pension then you will not pay any income tax at all. In fact some of my older colleagues at work are doing this.
Two issues though:
1. If your income is from employment, then you still have to pay NI contributions (based on gross salary), even if the lot goes into a pension scheme.
2. What do you live on?0
