Hi
My sister has been getting calls from Cabot Financial for months, they call all times of day and night saying that she owes something like £1000 (I cant remember the actual amount) and every time they call she asks them what the money was for (as she cant remember owing £1000 for anything) and they keep saying that they cant tell her so she is refusing to pay it.
So now every time they call she says that she is refusing to talk to them until the can tell her where this debt has come from but she keeps getting the same answer that they cant tell her but they will send a letter explaining it.
Well letter came today and it still didnt say what the debt was for as it was just basic information on the balance of the debt.
is there some way of finding out where this debt came from and to stop them form calling all the time?? My mum is worried sick about it, they are calling late at night and even early sunday mornings also.
She has said to them that she will start paying it off if they can tell her what it was for but they start demanding payment without giving answers and arguing about it.
Can anyone help??
thanks

Get her to write and say she will report them for harassment . Tell them she is making note of time of all calls . Tell her to give no imformation over the phone. Check details on the letter , it could be they have a person with same name . Others will give more advice soon .0

If she does not believe the debt is hers and they will not provide proof, then just send the the generic "prove it" letter from National Debtline.
If it does turn out it is a genuine debt of hers, then it will be "Statute Barred" by now.Amend Green text (and any other) to suit your circumstances.1 High Street,

I do not acknowledge any debt to you or any other company or organisation that you claim to be representing.
Dear Sir/Madam
Ref: xxxxxxxxxxx
You have contacted us regarding the account with the above reference number, which you claim is owed by ourselves.
We would point out that we have no knowledge of any such debt being owed to The Loan Company.
We are familiar with the ‘Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidance’ which states that it is unfair to send demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question.
We would also point out that the OFT say under the Guidance that it is unfair to pursue third parties for payment when they are not liable. In not ceasing collection activity whilst investigating a reasonably queried or disputed debt you are using deceptive/and or unfair methods.
Furthermore, ignoring and/or disregarding claims that debts have been settled or are disputed and continuing to make unjustified demands for payment amounts to physical/psychological harassment.
We would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above accounts unless you can provide evidence as to our liability for the debt in question.
We await your written confirmation that this matter is now closed. Otherwise we will have no option but to make a complaint to the trading standards department and consider informing the OFT of your actions.
We look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully
Mrs A N Other
You can read about that in the following link, which includes a letter to send if that applies.
