    Sunday Morning, sticking to only a FTSE 100 tracker wouldn't be a great idea but that's not what someone with a balanced portfolio of investments would do. One reason not to do it is that it includes boom companies like tech stocks and there's no human view on whether it's sensible to include them in the same proportion as in the FTSE 100 index.

    Northern Rock isn't an unusual event for the FTSE. It happens about once every ten years that a member company loses most of its value.
