Selling Jewellery

Probably not the place to post this but I have a diamond 18 ct white gold engagement ring but I am unsure where to sell it?

I have looked on ebay, but i doubt it would sell.

Anyone know any websites/places i could sell it (i live in Kent)? I know there is a jewellers in the town, and they will offer me around £50 for it.

Thanks guys

  • Hi,
I buy and sell a fair bit on Ebay (especially jewellery) and I have been very surprised by just how cheaply diamond rings sell on there. However, 18kt gold and white gold are more sought after, so if you wanted to you could try listing it at a relatively high price and if someone really falls in love with the ring you might sell it (you just need a very good pic, description and a title with as many appropriate search words as possible).

You do get a lot of ppl selling cheap/poorer quality diamond rings on there though from very low prices, so it brings down the amount that people can get for rings overall.

Is there any way you could refund the ring at the jeweller's where it was bought? If not, then I'd suggest listing it for a good price, and accept that it might not sell. However, I wouldn't start the bidding cheap as you're likely to sell it cheaply.

There are pawnbrokers and places where you could trade rings in but you wouldn't be likely to get a lot. There are also sites like gumtree, or you could try listing it for sale in a paper, but people prefer to be able to see a ring in front of them. If you have a certificate of authenticity or valuation then i'd suggest mentioning it when you list the ring for sale.

If it was me, I'd try listing it on ebay starting at around the lowest price I'd be comfortable accepting (which for anything *nice* wouldn't be too cheap) and see where it goes from there. Diamond jewellery is one area where I would totally ignore what prices other rings are starting at. Also, mention any hallmarks etc on the ring, the cut of the stone, its quality, clarity, place of purchase (if it's somewhere nice) etc, as this will affect whether or not some ppl will buy it. Also, only post it by registered! Just a few thoughts.

    Thank you for this!!!

What i might try and do is get my sister to get a good pic of it (she is brill at good pics). If i list it and it doesnt sell then i will probably take it to a jewellery shop and get the £50 for it.

    Thanks for the tips though!

  • Btw, from 20/2 Ebay Uk are decreasing their listing fees and increasing their final value fees, but it means it probably works out cheaper to list things repeatedly if they don't sell immediately.

As for the ring, any idea what it's worth? £50 doesn't seem like much for it if it cost like £1k.

It didnt cost £1000 it cost £300. Its from Ernest Jones so its not worth a great deal, whcih is why i probably think £50 is about right.

  • Ah ok. That isn't too bad then, but you'd probably still do better than £50 on ebay.

Just to add to this thread does anyone have any advice on how to sell a £1100 Platinum engagement ring and wedding ring? The wedding ring was bought in the bahamas for around £400(cheaper over there) but has no markings or engravings on it. It is noticibly heavier tho than silver and i hav ethe boxes from the jewellers in Bahamas to proove it. I also have all the certificates etc from Beaverbrooks for my Engagement ring. I know above ebay has been mentioned but there dont seem to be selling for more than a tenth of their bought price if at all. Im in the process of getting divorced, a single mum of two now and my washing machine has just collapsed on me... So hoping for a quick sale.
