GPS with Laptop

Options
Hi,

I am looking around for a GPS system. Other than the PDA option, I found that my laptop can be converted as a GPS tool, with the voice instructions and everything.

Does anyone have any views?

I don't know where to place the laptop though, as I would have a passenger. So cannot place it on the passenger seat. And worried about it falling off accidentally. Is this not such a brilliant idea?

The reason I am even considering this is because it would cost me only £85 to get this with the software and I already have a good laptop that I don't use a lot.

All suggestions/ideas/tips welcome.

Thanks in advance,
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

    HI

I have just do the same thing using my laptop, Bought a usb GPS mouse from ebay, this cost £23 (was sent from Singapore but only had to wait for 5 days!)
The software was also from ebay, I used Mapsonic was bought for less than £10, the person I bought it from says they have resell rights from Mapsonic so looks legit.

    All worked together ok.
As for where to put the laptop, Just get you passenger to hold it!
The setup is not as portable as a PDA but a fraction of the price and I only need GPS when i'm going to a new place.

    Good Luck

    Matt

I found a USB GPS mouse and the software offered as a package on EBAY. I'm not sure if the software is good. Do you know anything about InfoMap Navigator (GB & Ireland)?

  • depends on how you want to do it, if you want to go to an extreme as someone i know has, they have hard wired a laptop into their car, with a tv out to a 7" monitor, but this is only beacause he has made full use of it, playing DVDs, his music and sat nav...

but if you just need sat nav, you prob be better off spending on a cheap older pda. about 30, some memory (sd/mmc/cf) even as cheap as £10-20 quid and then a gps and in car holder, should total to around 100 odd, can get all of this on eBay quite cheap and then use very good satnav software like tomtom5, as thats what i use and it is by far the best software i have used!

dont like the idea of using laptop and too much of a distraction whilst driving esp if its not secured, you will be worried if its going to fall and may not pay attn whilst driving........
