I called the help line yesterday and under their advice, sent two tickets, two application forms (they were adamant that you needed to send one per tickets).

And then they confirmed that if you enclose a letter asking for a full refund they'll send it to you.

I'm a bit concerned now I'm only going to get a few quid, and not the £120 that I wasted on tickets..
  • Do you need to send the actual ticket back to claim a refund?

I am wondering if the booking confirmation e-mail may do the trick? I threw away the tickets after my tortuous New Year's Day journey (I didn't want to be reminded of that trip any longer!)
  • where2save..this is what the Virgin T&C's state:

For customers who bought their tickets at a Virgin Train’s station, credit card or debit card receipts dated between 31 December 2007 – 3 January 2008 (inclusive) and payable to West Coast Trains Ltd, will be accepted as proof of purchase. Photocopies of tickets will not be accepted. Customers who have purchased a ticket through a travel agent or third party retailer can send booking confirmation for a Virgin Trains journey dated between 31 December 2007 – 3 January 2008, (inclusive) as proof of purchase.

I phoned them as there were three in our party and we only received one PIN code by email. My tickets were taken off me at London Marylebone where we were diverted to so I quoted my ticket reference and they asked for the names of the people travelling and said new pin codes would be with me within 5 days.

Before I spoke to them on the phone I had emailed them. A couple of days later I received this reply:

    Thanks for your email.

You will receive an email by the end of this week confirming your pin code for your free journey.
Please be aware we will only issue one pin code per booking. Therefore on receipt of your email please call 0844 415 4422
With your booking reference number and after validating your claim we will send you any additional pin codes due. These additional pin codes will be posted out in approx 5 days.

Once again my apologies for the problems encountered on your recent journey.

Don't get too excited. Got my PIN by e-mail. Tried twice and just got an error message that it did not work on my selected journey - in spit of the fact that it complied with the offers T&Cs  Rang the advice number. The Asian call centre first claimed they knew nothing about this offer, then the supervisor told me it had been withdrawn (this on the first day of the offer!) I was then told to ring Customer Services on a different number. 20 mins n no reply - BTW mind the voice activation on the initial call it has real difficulty with northern regional accents, think Virgin need to return to push button. Two e-mails (promised to answer within 12 hours - 48 hours later n no reply) and two calls later still not resolved. So Virgin compound a crap train service with an even worse customer relations services. Time they got their act together! Lets know how you get on.
  • As an update, I just got another letter repsonding to my second ticket refund request - I sent them seperately,at the same time, as requested.

The fares were £30.50 each. One has been refunded in full now - £31 of vouchers. The other was refunded £8. Obviously one of us was more inconvenienced than the other!

Bit late coming back to this....

We got our first PIN code by email as we booked online. I called the helpline as detailed above two weeks later received another two PIN codes by post.

I wanted to book Liverpool - Edinburgh but kept receiving error messages saying this wasn't valid. I then realised that although it's a valid route you can't break your journey and this journey involved a change at Wigan. So I tried again, booking this time from Wigan to edinburgh, and got three tickets no problem.

Only problem was that I had to book them individually so they weren't seated together so I phoned customer services and they moved them for us.

Tickets would have been £200+ each so very satisfied.

On the other hand we wrote over a month ago asking for compensation for the original journey, two weeks later we had an acknowledgement but nothing since.

Has anyone had any problems with this ? I'm trying to book a weekend to Nottingham from London but keep getting The promotional tickets do not exist for the journey entered.

I can't see what's wrong with my choice, I'm sure the trains are direct :S

Isn't the offer for free travel on Virgin's (west coast mainline) network? Surely Nottingham's on the midland mainline?
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...
